1. In the introduction to this unit, the textbook says that over time the British East India Company came to govern, “directly or indirectly,” a large portion of India. What do you think indirect rule would look like, who would be in charge, how would it affect the people? What do you think direct rule would look like? Be as specific as the textbook allows.

 

2. The East India Company took India’s raw goods but did not allow them to “compete” with British finished goods. What does this mean? Can you predict how India’s workers and farmers will react to this?
