Announcing the Next DaBrook Workshop: ExpressionEngine Tips and Tricks
01.14.2010
02.02.10 Update - Details for the ExpressionEngine Tips and Tricks Workshop.
The Choice
At the end of the last EE2 workshop I asked attendees if they would rather attend an Advanced ExpressionEngine workshop or an Introduction CodeIgniter Workshop. The votes were fairly evenly split, but the advanced EE workshop won out in the end.
When I started working out the details of what the workshop would entail I came up with a slightly different title: The ExpressionEngine Tips and Tricks Workshop.
The ExpressionEngine Tips and Tricks Workshop
Date and Location
Date: Sunday, March 21, 2010
Location: CDIA in DC (same as the last workshop)
Registration
Student Cost: $60 for students
General Public: $120 for general public
Early Bird: $99
Early bird registration will open on February 1
Topics
This workshop will focus on four non-beginner EE topics:
- Using segments and conditionals to limit the number of templates you use. (1.6, 2.0).
- Crazy cool stuff you can do with FieldFrame (1.6, we’ll see about 2.0).
- Stand alone entry forms. (1.6, 2.0)
- Making Accessories. (2.0)
Note: We may use 1.6 and 2.0 in the workshop depending on how built out 2.0 is by March.
Rational for the Topics
When I was deciding on what an “advanced” EE class would entail a few things came to mind: efficiency, game changing plugins, opening up the front end with SAEF, and seeing how easy it is to create accessories with EE2. Of course there are many many more topics that we could cover, like module development, caching, how to best structure your site, etc. But I feel happy with these topics. It is still early, though, and if you want me to include a topic not listed above please let me know.
I also thought that having a “Tips and Tricks” workshop is something that we could have again in a year with new topics.
Some Improvements From the Last Workshop
At the request of attendees from last time, I will run this workshop with examples that we build out from scratch step by step.
At this workshop we should have a good mix of folks newer to EE hanging out with more experienced EE developers, which makes for great discussions and more perspective. I will also encourage more people to install EE locally so that we can leave the Internet to surfing and twittering.
More to Come
I will post the full information for the workshop next week and look for registration to open on Feb. 1.
