In this one day workshop you will learn everything you need to know to start building easy to update web sites with ExpressionEngine, often called the most flexible CMS on the market. We will will start with an HTML5 and CSS3 template for a freelancer portfolio web site and learn how to build it out into a site that you can fully manage from the ExpressionEngine control panel.
Date and Location

- Date: Saturday, June 18, 2011
- Time: 10am - 3pm (hour for lunch)
- Location: Viget Labs 400 S. Maple Avenue, Suite 200 Falls Church, VA 22046
Big thanks to the wonderful folks at Viget Labs for agreeing to host the event! We will work in a little classroom they setup for us with some desks and a projector.
About halfway through the day we'll take a lunch break. You can bring your own lunch or join us downstairs at Pizzaria Orso.
Target Audience
This workshop is aimed at web design students and professionals who have basic HTML and CSS skills and have maybe even worked a bit with another CMS. No programming experience is necessary because ExpressionEngine does not require PHP programming.
Since we only have 20 spaces, it would be nice if all of the attendees had a real passion for learning ExpressionEngine.
Content Covered
We will cover the following content in this workshop:
- Templates
- ExpressionEngine Tags
- Content Channels
- Custom Fields
- Sending Email
- Launching and Migrating EE
All of the topics will come together in one project, a freelance web designer portfolio site.
What You Need
Everyone will need a laptop computer with wifi, code editing software, and a browser.
Thanks to EllisLab, all attendees will have a copy of ExpressionEngine installed on EngineHosting servers to use for the duration of the workshop. If you would like to keep what you do in the workshop you will need to purchase an ExpressionEngine license.
If you already have an EE license and your own server, you can follow along with the workshop and keep the final project on your own site.
Apply to Attend
Since there are only 20 seats available for us at the wonderful Viget Labs, there will be an application and selection process to make sure that those who attend really want to be there. In the form below, take a few lines to say why you would like to attend and what you plan to do with EE after the workshop.
Applications will be accepted up until Friday, June 3 and selected attendees will be announced Monday, June 6 2011.
