Using a stolen cell phone, scammers call "home," "mom," or "dad" and lay the trap. With a recording of someone yelling for help in the background the "kidnapper" reads from a script about how they meant to kidnap a dignitaries son but instead ended up with your child. In the shock and fear of the moment, parents often give in to the ransom before even investigating to find that their son or daughter was never actually kidnapped.
